Mzinyathini Secondary School - (Mat. South)
Mzinyathini Secondary school was established in 1968. It is a co-educational institution with a current student population of over 500.

In 1996, the School Development Committee embarked on a five year development programme. The main aim of this programme is to provide an adequate science-learning environment and expose students to a conducive learning atmosphere that will make them approach the Science subjects in particular with confidence and meet the demands of "A" level Science as well as of NUST and the challenges of this modern world of technology.

The school presently offers Integrated Science as well as Biology to the "O" level students but there are intentions to introduce and fully implement Physics with Chemistry in addition to the above as soon as the laboratory meets the requirements and standard of teaching Physics and Chemistry.

To achieve these aims, the SDC is currently finishing off the construction of the Science Laboratory. Besides the construction of the laboratory, the SDC has set aside Z$15 270 a year towards buying and maintenance of Science equipment but this falls short of what is realistically required.

The SDC has therefore found it necessary to introduce a special construction levy of Z$100 per pupil per term with effect from 1 September 1997 if the 5 year plan is to be realised. The levy will remain operational until a time that the school has completely furnished the laboratory, undergone a huge facelift that is long overdue as well as expanding the Boarding facilities of the section of the school which is the next phaseof development. This focuses mainly on building modern hostels for girls since the SDC plans to provide boarding facilities for the girl child who is not catered for in the Umzingwane District Boarding Schools.

The school is committed to providing the best learning environment to its pupils but financial constraints hinder the progress as the school  entirely depends on the meagre capita grants and very minimal levies. With such a background, the school definitely needs assistance for the laboratory fittings and equipment in order to start an effective and meaningful Science Education Programme.
