Siganda
Secondary School - Mat. North
Background: Established in 1981. It was established as a three stream school and steadily rose to a five stream school. The present enrolment stands at 798 with 352 boys and 446 girls. This is unique but a positive situation which is in line with the current gender affirmative iisues. The school has a compliment of 27 teachers, a bursar, a clerk, lab hand and six general hands. Four teachers are University graduates, twenty are college graduates and three are on temporary basis. The growth of the school has been in terms of enrolment and not infrastructurally. In 1994, with the formation of the SDA, parents undertook a project to construct their own classroom. This is facilitated by the levying of all pupils enrolled at the school. The Donor Community are also of great assistance to the parents projects. At present a two classroom block, entirely funded by parents, is under construction. In 1997 parents connected the school to ZESA power at a cost of $60 000-00. The school has at present one laboratory which is not satisfactorily stocke with basic apparatus and chemicals. The only laboratory is not enough for the 20 classes at the school and as such some of the Science lessons are held in ordinary classrooms. Pupils at Siganda pay $75-00 per term in tuition fees, $7-00 per term in G.P. fees. The SDA also levies them $15-00 per year in General levy and $170-00 Development levy. The latter is for structural developments at the school while the former is to supplement G.P. fees. Any assistance by way of science equipment will be greatly appreciated.
Report provided in 1999.
