Tsheli Secondary School - Mat. North

 School Establishment

The school was established in 1984. It came as a response to the post-independence demand for secondary education. Though the beginning was difficult, the determination of parents helped make the school a reality. Since then, the local community has continued to support development of the school. For example, the now has a well developed infrastructure that provides an adequate base for learning although more needs to be done for the teaching and learning of science in partcular.

 School Enrolment

The school opened its doore to 53 pupils and 3 teachers in 1984. The pupil population has been steadily increasing ever since. For instance, in 1997, the enrolment was 412 pupils. Of this total, 198 were girls and 214 boys. In 1998, the enrolment rose slightly to 436 pupils: 206 girls and 230 girls. It must be mentioned that there has been a significant improvement in the number of girls remaining in the school.

Number of techers

As previously indicated, the school began with 3 teachers but the number is now 14. What is also encouraging is that, most of the teachers are secondary school trained and there are 2 certificate graduates. The science department in particular, is staffed with qualified and experienced teachers.

 Stage of The building programme

In terms of physical development, the school has moved well ahead compared with secondary schools of its age. The school has a modern administration block, 8 ordinay classrooms, a large library with both a stackroom and a reading room, 1 unfitted laboratory, 1 agriculture block and work on the completion of the Home economics block is in progress. Teachers' houses are adequate. The school has 7 standard houses and plans to put up the eight house.

 State of the laboratories

The only laboratory in the school has been under-utilised for the past seven years because it still has no fittings and this has, in fact, negatiely affected the teaching/learning of science. The syllabus that is in he school curriculum, ie Integrated Science, cannot be used by students to study A level Physics or Chemistry. While the staff are properly qualified to teach these science subjects at O level, the stae of the laboratory in this school cannot support this development. There is, therefore, a desperate need to fit the laboratory and extend it so that students can gain a proper scientific base.

 School fees per term

The fees and levies charged per term per child are as follows:

Tuition                          $50-00
Building Fund             $30-00

General Purpose         $40-00

Industrial Fees            $20-00

TOTAL                        $140-00

Any assistance towards the fittings of the laboratory and equipment will be highly appreciated.

Report provided in 1999.
