It is indeed a wonderful gesture and remarkable the speed with which the West has responded to the victims of the Tsunami mainly in South Asia. Not to undermine the sterling response under difficult circumstances.... if the same had happened to sub Sahara I wonder if the West would have responded as promptly as they did. Or it would have been a delayed response that African victims are accustomed to. Maybe again it’s generated so much attention because of the kith and kin. Remember the floods in Mozambique, famine, genocides and wars. Look at the situation in DRC, Darfur and compare with the conflict in the Balkans and how NATO was swift and equal to the task. They didn't sit down pondering and debating if it was genocide or not, they were decisive.
Maybe I've got a selective hearing/sight, I haven't seen much coverage on Somalia ...is it because the damage wasn’t to the same magnitude as in Asia or is it not news enough? Maybe I'm just being cynical discounting the positives that the West has done to sub-Saharan Africa ...and quick to scream RACISM.
