There is one teacher I will never forget in my life. He taught me when I was doing grade 4 at a primary school in the suburb of Njube. The man was what I can call a sadist. He was infamous for his forehand and backhand clap that would send you reeling either to connect with a wall or the floor. He used to bring all sorts of punitive contraptions and gleefully lambaste us whenever one gave a wrong answer. I was a pupil that could call "bright" when I was in grade three but my results took a noise dive during this teacher's tutelage. Even if I knew the answer to a question, this teacher's menacing approached would leave me a stattering and stammering wreck that I would give the most stupid of answers because of fright. Even though I am not one who is against a little corporal punishment for wrong-doers, I did not think this teacher's teaching method was effective at all. I was so traumatised the whole year and I think I can still feel the after effects of this teacher even today. I heard the man died. Fortunately it wasnt until after ten years that I heard of his death otherwise I would have gone to his funeral to sing "sathane suka emva kwami".

In fact Zelizwe abuse of pupils/students by teachers in Zimbabwe is quite common. They will be breaking the rules. There are teachers who believe in being feared by students, and they use corporal punishment to effect that. There are many people out there who have suffered abuse at the hands of their teachers. As you said, this abuse has long term pyschological consequences, not to mention hatred for the subject.

One colleague who was at Minda mission as a student recalled the shocking sexual abuse of girls by male teachers. She even said that one teacher who was notorious for sexually abusing girls, even walked into class the one day with a huge erection. This is public indecency. When the girls laughed at him, he beat up the whole class.

This teacher, it is said would call a girl he fancied into his storeroom-cum office where he would fondle the her, and ultimately let his hand into her pantie. A girl had to be transferred because of the teacher's relentless and insulting advances. But sadly the teacher was never dismissed, because of lack of conclusive evidence.

Angitsho ukuthi amankazana they don't make advances to their teachers, kodwa a lot of male teachers have brought the teaching profession into disrepute by abusing school children, physically and sexually.

Okufunekayo is for every parent/guardian to engage in active listening lomntwana. Ubekwazi ukuthi esikolo sakhe izinto zihamba njani. You never know your child might be in a difficult situation at school because of his/her teachers. He also made us creative ngokusipha "assignments" where we come up with the topic ourselves, and work as individuals, then as groups.

You remember that I never allowed anybody to harrass you guys. You remember that in the competitions for the cleanest dormetory on Saturdays, our Mfihlo used to win all the time. I am glad that I played a role in shaping the minds of future Ndebele young vibrant and radical leaders. This that I served as your school & dormetory prefect for 2 years and you (Sinatha) were one of my favourite guys not least because me and your brother Sbali were great great friends to this day. Ironically, your very own Mntongenakudla spent the said two years with you guys because as you know he was my best friend and as such we used the same dorm.
The debates in that school were indeed fascinating and they prepared us for the rigours of the turbulent political terrain that we experience today.

Ngabe ukhona owafunda eRoss Camp Primary (BULAWAYO) yini ngama1980's. I was there upto 1986 and I was very VERY fortunate to be taught by one great man called Mr JEALOUS NDLOVU . As teachers come he remains the best one I have ever seen. He gave me the greatest gift of all-belief in myself and my abilities.
Since leaving his class I have come across some great teachers. Some of them have become my biggest friends. However none has touched my life the way Mr Ndlovu did. When I first fell under his hand I was a raw boy from Maphaneni with not much courage but he really took his time in moulding me into one of the best students to ever grace Ross Camp primary for when I left, thanks to him, I was a mini-legend at that place-scooping all prices at prize giving ceremonies for four years in a row.
He was firm with the stick, brutal even, but I have never resented the thrashing or the hiding he used to administer because I know it was for the right reasons. He never set out to hit us for his own pleasure but it was all done in a loving way.The man was simply great.
Over the years I have lost track of him. The last time I saw him I was with a friend and we gave him a lift to Emakhandeni from Sigumila in Luveve and I remember remarking to my friend that he did not look changed a bit. He still looked youngish and full of energy and I hope even today he still remains a great teacher giving other poor kids the same great gift of self-belief that he gave me.
Indeed I was deeply honoured to have been a student of this great master. I do not want to undermine the efforts of my other teachers but I know after Mr Ndlovu what they were dealing with was an already finished product.My beloved teacher had already cut out all the rough edges. Among some of his great students were the late Benjamin Nkonjere and Youngman Moyo. He also mentored a lot of other boys and girls who have gone on to make great names for themselves in academic circles.
If by chance he reads this let him be proud for he is one hell of a great man and teacher. TRULY A GREAT MAN!!!
