Application for a child support grant


Description




A child support grant is money paid to the primary care giver of a child to provide for his or her basic needs.

The child support grant for 2005 is R180.

Application requirements

The applicant must be the primary care giver of the child or children concerned
The child and primary care giver must be South African Citizens and resident in South Africa
The child or children must be under the age of 14.
The applicant and spouse must meet the requirements of the means test
A means test is the test used to measure the financial status of the applicant. In order to receive a grant, the applicant’s financial income should be below a certain level. You can pass the means test if you live in
a rural area and you earn less than R1 100 per month or R13 200 per year;
an urban area in an informal house or a shack and you earn less than R1 100 per month or R13 200 per year; or
an urban area in a house or flat and you earn less than R800 a month or R9 600 a year
The applicant may not apply for support for more than six children of whom he or she is not the biological parent.

Steps to follow





Apply at the Social Development Office nearest to where you live.
Ask a family member or friend to apply on your behalf if you are too old or sick to travel to the office. The person applying on your behalf should submit a letter from you and/or a doctor's note explaining why you cannot visit the office. A home visit may also be arranged.
If you are working, you must show proof of your recent income (e.g. pay slip) or make a sworn statement.
If you are married, show proof of your wife or husband's income (e.g. pay slip) if they are working or make a sworn statement.
If you were retrenched or fired from your previous work, show a copy of your discharge certificate.
If you are unemployed, make an affidavit at the police station to prove that you do not have an income.
If you are not the parent of the child, and you are taking care of him/her, make an affidavit at the police station to prove that you have permission from the parents to take care of the child.
Complete your application form in the presence of an officer from the department.
Submit the completed application form together with your ID document and the child’s/children’s birth certificate.
Obtain a receipt once your application has been submitted.
Keep this receipt as proof of your application.

The application may be processed within three months.
The Social Security Office will inform you in writing whether or not your application has been successful
If your grant is approved, you will be paid from the day you applied.
If the Social Security Office does not approve your application, you will be informed in writing as to reasons why your application was unsuccessful.
If you disagree with the decision, lodge an appeal to the Minister or MEC through the national or provincial office of the department in writing and within 90 days of notification of the outcome of your application.
A grant is payable by the following methods:
Cash at a specific pay point on a particular day
Electronic deposit into your bank account (the bank may charge you for the service)
Post Office
Institution (e.g. children’s home)
