celebrating crime? I thought it was obvious what all the hype is about.The film is the "reality" of our social system in south africa.That's the purpose of film making ,to highlight some of these issues not celebrate them.If you stayed till the end you d have heard the "voice over" condeming the everyday actions of people like Tsotsi!It will touch many a tsotsis out there ,that , i m sure of!

Lizakhumbula ukuthi ngomnyaka ophelileyo there was another film nominated for the Oscars eka Leleti Khumalo about AIDS. Did that change anything, inspire anyone?

Ukuthi uTsotsi will inspire otsotsi kangazi ngoba ngo ntamo iqinile. Njalo is the filimu riyelistikhi? Kodwa it's sad in my opinion ukuthi i crime rate yase mzansi is being exploited in this way. It's more important to address the causes.

Award-winning movie Tsotsi has been given a real fong kong touch in China’s city of Gonzo.

The Chinese are selling the pirated DVD version for R5,90 and to appeal to their market, they have replaced the faces on the cover.

Believe it or not, Presley Chweneyagae is now Bollywood actor Shunil Shetty.

And could Bollywood’s Fardeen Khan, who is holding a gun, be Mothusi Magano or maybe Israel Makoet?

Also, to cater for those who can’t pronounce the South African stars’ names, they have been translated into Chinese.

The cherry on top is that the copycats put the “just do it” Nike swoosh on the cover, probably meaning they’ve “just done it”.

And oh, to tempt consumers to watch it, the cover features scenes from Vin Diesel’s A Man Apart.

A businesswoman who doesn’t want to be named says she bought a copy while on a working trip last week.

She says she heard South Africans living there making a fuss about “a white Tsotsi”. She was curious and decided to buy it.

“I am irritated that they have the nerve to feature faces that don’t belong there and, worse, sell it at the price of a loaf of bread.

“It’s disgusting.”

The news about this DVD came as a shock to Chweneyagae.

He says: “I don’t know about it so I can’t say a thing.”

Lead actress Terry Pheto says: “I’m saddened and angered by the replacement of our faces on the cover, especially after all the hard work the cast and crew put into it.

“I hope those who are involved in this will be brought to book.”

The director of the movie, Gavin Hood, is overseas, so Sunday World spoke to the producer, Gavin Raleigh.

He says: “Oh my word! This is terrible for the industry. I know Gavin will be depressed and devastated. I will let the people who deal with piracy know about this.”

It seems like Tsotsi was cursed from the beginning.

Two weeks before it hit movie houses, Tsotsi was already in the hands of the tsotsis and available on the streets of Jozi.

I finally got to watch this movie last night and I have to say that whilst I enjoyed it and it kept me glued to the screen, I find it hard to understand why it won an Oscar.


The movie is forgetable I must say,!

You probably never going to understand why? until you get the mssge the story wanted to tell,the centre of the movie being the boy and his upbringing and the hardships of getto life.
