Ragga artist Stitch, who mourned his Stable 999 mate and friend Zombo two weeks ago, has revealed he is also dying.





“I have Aids. I am dying,” Stitch, whose real name is Lucas Tshepo Setwaba, told Sowetan yesterday.

But unlike Zombo he blames no one but himself for his predicament.

The 31-year-old, who was once in Arthur Mafokate’s Stable 999, discovered his status last December when he started losing weight after being diagnosed with TB.

“I was not surprised when I found out because I was very promiscuous. I had too many girlfriends and did not use condoms half the time,” he said.

A jobless Stitch, who was a natty dresser in his Stable 999 heyday, said he lives in Kagiso, West Rand, with his jobless mother who survives on a government pension.

Stitch has also featured in Mafokate’s kwaito group All Star Madrid and rocked nightclubs with his solo albums King of Digong and Matha Wena.

“My mother pays my medical bills. My friends from the music industry often visit me and bring me goodies,” Stitch said.

“Neighbours and old friends are supportive and understanding. Though I do not have girlfriends anymore, I am not lonely. There is nothing like support when you are sick.”

Asked how he felt when he heard about Zombo’s death, Stitch said he was “saddened by the news because we used to talk a lot about our status and we comforted each other”.


Amaha spokesman Doc Shebeleza said there were many other artists who had Aids, but who are afraid to reveal their status.

“It is important for people who are HIV positive to talk about it so that they can get help and support. People like Arthur Mafokate must encourage his other artists to test early and disclose.”

Stitch said there was nothing Mafokate could do.

“ I’m in this situation because of my own doing. Arthur has nothing to do with it. He owes me nothing.”

Asked for comment, Mafokate said he would call back, but didn’t. When Sowetan called him, he did not answer.

Kwaito icon William Bongani Makhubela, also known as Ma-Willies, has died.

Makhubela, 38, drew his last breath at his Soweto home last night.

His manager Evo Dos Ramos said Ma-Willies had not been well recently and they had made plans for him to go into hospital today.

He said when he spoke to the rough-throated singer yesterday they agreed that he would go into hospital.
“We do not know what the cause is but we suspected TB because he had the symptons,” he said.
“Base 2 Base would like to pass its condolences to his wife and children,” said Dos Ramos.

Makhubela had just finished recording his latest album, titled Shark is Moving with Base 2 Base Records when he fell sick.
Ma-Willies featured on the albums of Mahoota – Phula, Mandla Spikire, Jacarumba and Brown Dash.

In 1997 he was approached by Mdu Masilela, a popular producer who invited him to join his record label. That’s where his first album Intwenjani, and the name Ma-Willies was adopted.

Ma-Willies was famous for songs like Intwenjani, Gagu, Bomba o Wele Bicycle and Thula Mabota.

He released eight albums including Intwenjan, Liya Khuzikhehla, Hoezet, Ke Tswere Lotto and Kwaito Graduation.
Makhubela is survived by his wife and children.

Dos Ramos said his company would arrange a memorial service for him soon.

Gospel heavyweight Vuyo Mokoena is fighting for his life after being admitted to Linksfield hospital in Jozi on Monday.

And his wife, Tebogo Mokoena, is asking for people to pray for him.

A close source says Vuyo is suffering from leukemia.

Tebogo says Vuyo started complaining of stomach pains and became weak.

She says he collapsed at their home on Monday.

Vuyo was rushed to hospital, where he is in a serious but stable condition.

“We were sitting at home when he suddenly complained about stomach pains and I rushed him to Linksfield hospital,” says Tebogo.

She says she doesn’t know what her famous husband is suffering from but the doctors suspect it could be cancer.

“The doctors are busy with tests trying to establish the cause of the sickness.

But a source close to the Mokoenas tells Sunday World that Vuyo is suffering from leukemia.

“He’s suffering from leukemia (cancer of the blood or bone marrow) and all his close friends are worried,” says our source.

Tebogo asked the public to pray for her husband’s speedy recovery and for the media to respect their privacy.

“We do not want people to speculate and we ask the media to respect the family’s privacy so that he can recover quickly.

“As Vuyo’s family, we are going through a difficult time. Please respect that,” says Tebogo.

Vuyo’s manager and producer Percy Ingle says: “How would you feel if your friend was sick?

“I’m not fine and please don’t ask me too many questions. I’m not a doctor. This call is over.”

SOUTH African gospel music icon Vuyo Mokoena died early Friday, a week after his second collapse at home where he was recovering from severe leukaemia, a family friend said.

An official announcement of the star’s death was due before lunchtime.

The Njalo star was first admitted to Johannesburg’s Linksfield Hospital in March after suddenly blacking out at his home. He was diagnosed with leukaemia - a type of cancer that affects the white blood cells.

Mokoena was discharged to recover at home.

But on Thursday last week, he was back in hospital, this time after going down with a severe headache. Doctors found he had a brain tumour.

A family spokesman, speaking at the time of his admission last week, said the award winning star was “awake and conscious of his surroundings, though he is very weak”.

“He is able to talk but his voice is deep and a bit hoarse, like somebody who has just woken up. His left eye is also a bit lazy but all of that is improving daily,” fellow gospel singer, Sipho Makhabane said, asking fans to pray for the star.

When he was first admitted in hospital, celebrity friends including Rebecca Malope rushed to his side.

His wife, Tebogo, remembered: “We were sitting at home when he suddenly complained about stomach pains and I rushed him to hospital.”
