Someone told me that our new player from Bulawayo, Kehli Dube, once played for Highlanders, so I thought you might like to know that he scored his first goal in United States Major League Soccer for the New England Revolution last night in a 2 - 0 win vs. San Jose Earthquakes.

I'm still looking for songs in Shona or Ndebele to sing for him from the supporters' section. If anyone can help us with that, please e-mail me - doug@dougly.com

If Mkhokheli Dube is a former bosso player then its taboo that you sing a shona song for the young man. Its unheard of in Mthwakazi culture its considered a bad omen lm sure there are people here who will tell you that singing in that other language would bring bad luck to the lad and l know you would want him to continue with his goal scoring skills for the good of the club. Sorry lm unable to provide you with a song right l will will ask around for appropriate songs...Mkhokheli should know a few tunes too..

Thank you for the education. I'm not completely sure that he was a bosso player, only that he's from Bulawayo. Someone told me he had been in black and white before, but it isn't mentioned in his team bio. Until I know for sure, I'll immediately stop trying to sing "Dzinomwa muna Save" for him (which is fine, since I only know 2 lines of it anyway).

Thanks again for your help.

OK, Now I finally have my proof that Kheli was a bosso player. The following is from the Boston Globe on March 4th:

Mkhokheli "Kheli" Dube, 24. He played at a high level in Africa before enrolling in college in the US. In fact, Dube scored a goal for Highlanders, the Zimbabwe representative in the 2001 African Champions Cup, in a 1-1 tie with Esperance of Tunisia in Bulawayo. But Dube considers the return leg an even more memorable event, though Highlanders were eliminated following a 6-0 defeat.

"Playing in Tunisia before 100,000 people was a great experience," Dube said. "But my goal was to go to school, because if you just play soccer, you might get injured, and if you don't have a degree, you can be in trouble."

Dube won the 2006 PDL national championship with the Michigan Bucks, a team Noonan played for in 2001 and '02, but sustained a knee injury in the '07 semifinals, returning to score 11 goals in 17 games for Coastal Carolina College. Dube's scoring instincts in the preseason have been impressive, but because he has only a student visa, he has been unable to travel to training camps outside the US.
