Johannesburg - ANC national chair Baleka Mbete says disgruntled party members who plan to start their own movement are wasting their energy, the SABC reports.

She was speaking to journalists after addressing Gauteng ANC branches and regions at the Johannesburg City Hall.

The meeting was part of a national campaign to explain the ANC National Executive Committee's decision to recall former President Thabo Mbeki last week.

Mbete, who is South Africa's new Deputy President, said disgruntled members should take their grievances to internal structures.

"The ANC believes that anybody who is thinking of going off and forming another party is wasting their energy.

"The rules and practices of the ANC allow people to raise whatever grievances they might have and express themselves.

"So we think it will be a wrong perspective to go off and form another entity," said Mbete.

Such comments from a high ranking politisian can only lead to a reversed prophecy in the end! The same way Ian Smith said that "no Black native, Ndebele, Shona, Manyika or Chewa, will rule Zimbabwe for a thousand years.", such ideotic remarks are not meant to last!
Such beliefs have a certain dictator characteristic in them!

At the rate at which the losers are quitting their jobs and therefore refusing to concede defeat, it looks increasingly likely that they will form some sort of grouping or party but things will be nasty. I hope this doesn't pour into the streets!

History does show that the "break away" factions soon become irrelevant/fragmented (with reference to the ANC anyway).
We have so many "opposition" parties in the country any addition becomes just another side show.

nami nje ngicabanga ukuthi bayobe bedlala ngesikhathi ngoba such parties become powerless when the people who support them realise that they were formed out of anger and humiliation rather than in purpose. the core of such a party will be to spite the ANC rather than to serve the people, so quite a few reasoning people will vote for them. entlik it will be another UDM in the making. most should retire from politics, finish and klaar.

Somebody from such a high rank like she is, i think she is afraid that if a new party is formed her position would be compromised.

Somebody of her status should be happy that this show that this country has democracy, unlike komgaxa whereby when you try to oppose the govt you get are arrested or killed

I think we must contextualise the quote by umama uMbete. Surely she must have been answering the question about the current rumour that her colleagues and comrades were going to start a breakaway party because they didn't like the way things were being handled by the ANC NEC.
If this is the case she is well within her rights to utter the words that she did.
If you only subscribe to democracy when it is dictated to by you and those whom you trust do you really believe in democracy?
It is like children playing a game of street soccer. When the team with the owner of the ball is winning they can play till nightfall but should that team start losing the owner of the ball suddenly says " sengiyemuka, ngisayohlola ukuthi izinkukhu zihlezi kahle ehhokweni. angisadlali lethani ibhola lami!"
How many break-away parties are they going to start? One after every election!
