The Ndebele people of Zimbabwe are coming together for the inaugural launch of the Mzilikazi Day celebrations in the UK. The one day commemorative event, which is community-driven will be held at the Holy Apostles Church Hall in Pimlico, on Sunday 12 October from 2pm to 11pm. The cultural event will feature traditional wedding party music, choir singing, poetry and dance performances that will appeal to people of all ages. All Zimbabweans are invited to come and enjoy this Ndebele cultural extravaganza.

On this day, the Ndebele community in the UK is officially coming out to first of all, celebrate who and what they are by recognising the past in order to live through the present and also prepare for the future. Second, this event is also to celebrate the now significant contribution of the Ndebele community to the UK, in terms of both cultural and economic activity. Above all, the day is about uplifting amaNdebele by giving them one day in the calendar when they can exercise their right to be themselves. This is in keeping with the UK’s - and London in particular - commitment to recognising and celebrating the contribution of every community to this country.

Headlining the celebrations will be the legendary former Black Umfolosi band leader, composer and singer Lucky Moyo and his new band uZambezi. Speaking about the event, Lucky Moyo says “This day will be, is about knowing who we are as a people. Bulawayo, Entumbane and Entabayezinduna would have been ideal places to hold this event but as can be seen in all immigrant communities, what matters is the spirit of the day.
This is a purely cultural project which is not going to be only about music and dance but also how we can harness our resources, network and support one another here in the UK and also back in the motherland.”

Entrance to the celebrations is free and all are welcome. The event will be the first of what is hoped will be an annual event in the UK, with different cities hosting it each time.
